Characterization of Mechanical Properties, Macroscopic Deformation Behavior, and Microstructure of Functionally Graded 22MnB5 Steel

The focus of this study is on the characterization local plastic deformation and failure functionally graded 22MnB5 plates after hot stamping using an in situ approach. Various forming strategies at elevated temperatures are performed differentially tempered tools to locally tailor microstructure. By controlling cooling rate, as well martensitic ferritic–pearlitic microstructures obtained. Experimental analysis includes evaluation material- geometry-dependent strain evolution by tensile tests coupled with digital image correlation conducted two different sample geometries, tapered nontapered. results reveal a much more complex behavior for than homogenous samples. As expected, distribution depending mixture its constituting microstructures; however, types localized necking found. Obviously, also depends geometry. Failure patterns observed include shear bands, crossed or localization strain, i.e., traditional necking. Eventually, case nontapered geometry, lower level multiple sites observed. Based findings presented, detailed process-microstructure-property-damage relationships established.
